Why It's Not Simple Math

The VA Combined Ratings Formula Explained

01

Sort Highest to Lowest

The VA arranges your conditions from highest-rated to lowest. The most disabling condition is applied first against the "whole person."

02

The Whole Person Method

You start as a 100% able-bodied person. Each condition reduces what remains. A 50% rating takes 50% of your 100% — leaving 50%. The next condition is then applied to that 50%, not to 100%.

03

Combined, Not Added

Two 50% conditions don't equal 100%. The first takes you to 50% remaining. The second takes 50% of that 50% — leaving 25% remaining, for a combined disability of 75%.

04

Rounded to Nearest 10%

After applying the formula, the VA rounds the result to the nearest 10%. A combined value of 62% becomes 60%. A 65% becomes 70%. This final rounded number is your official rating.

This calculator uses the standard VA combined ratings formula for educational estimation. Your actual VA rating is determined by the VA based on medical evidence, C&P exam results, and applicable diagnostic codes. Results from this tool do not constitute an official VA rating determination.
