Understanding Your Compensation

Rates Are Tax-Free

VA disability compensation is not considered taxable income by the IRS. Every dollar you receive in monthly compensation is yours to keep — no federal income tax, no state tax in most states.

Annual COLA Adjustments

VA disability rates are adjusted each year based on the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), typically announced in October and effective December 1st. Rates shown here reflect the 2026 adjustment effective December 1, 2025.

Dependents Matter at 30%+

At 10% and 20%, the VA pays a flat rate regardless of dependents. Starting at 30%, dependent status — spouse, children, and dependent parents — increases your monthly compensation amount.

100% P&T Opens More Doors

A Permanent & Total (P&T) rating at 100% may unlock additional benefits including CHAMPVA for dependents, free college tuition in many states, property tax exemptions, and more.

Back Pay Starts at Your Effective Date

When your claim is approved, you receive back pay from your effective date — not the decision date. Filing an Intent to File (ITF) can protect an effective date up to a year before you submit your full claim.

Ratings Can Be Increased
