Getting Started & Eligibility
To receive a VA disability rating, you must file a claim showing that a current medical condition is connected to your military service. The VA requires a diagnosis, service records establishing an in-service event or injury, and ideally medical evidence linking the two — called a nexus. For an increase, you file a claim demonstrating that a condition you're already rated for has worsened over time.
An Intent to File (ITF) is a formal notice to the VA that you plan to submit a disability claim. Filing an ITF locks in your effective date for up to one year — meaning if your claim is approved, your back pay can go back to the date you filed the ITF, not the date you submitted the full claim.
It's one of the most valuable — and most underused — tools in the entire claims process. VetBeacon teaches you when and how to use it strategically so you don't leave money on the table.
An OTH discharge doesn't automatically disqualify you from all VA benefits, but it does complicate things. Certain VA benefits require a Character of Discharge determination, and in some cases you may be able to appeal your discharge characterization through the Discharge Review Board or Board for Correction of Military Records.
VetBeacon can help you understand your general options. For formal discharge upgrade proceedings or legal representation on characterization appeals, we recommend connecting with an accredited attorney or veterans legal services organization.
The VetBeacon program is designed for veterans at any stage of the claims process — whether you're filing for the first time, seeking an increase, or navigating the appeals process after a denial. There is no minimum rating required to participate.
That said, once a veteran has reached 100% Permanent & Total (P&T), the other filing options available would fall under Special Monthly Compensation (SMC), which applies to specific qualifying circumstances such as loss of use of a limb or the need for regular aid and attendance. VetBeacon does maintain a free resource center with SMC information for veterans interested in learning more about those options — but we would not recommend enrolling in the full program if SMC is the only remaining filing avenue available to a veteran.

Yes. Whether your claim is currently pending, recently decided, or sitting in the appeals process, VetBeacon can help you. We'll assess where you are in the process and provide guidance on how to strengthen your position from that point forward — whether that means supplementing existing evidence, preparing for an upcoming C&P exam, or understanding the options available after a decision.
Absolutely. A denial is not the end — it's often the beginning of a stronger path forward. VetBeacon helps you understand the specific reason for the denial, identify what evidence was missing or unconvincing, and build a better case for a supplemental claim, Higher-Level Review, or Board of Veterans' Appeals appeal.
Denials are common. Many are overturnable with the right evidence and approach. Don't walk away after a no — reach out and let's figure out the next move together.
How VetBeacon Works
Most services either file paperwork for you — VSOs, accredited agents, attorneys — or charge a percentage of your back pay. VetBeacon does neither. We are an education and empowerment program. We teach you how the process works so you can engage with it confidently and intelligently, whether you work with a VSO or navigate it independently.
We were built by people who have worked inside the VA disability claims system. We know what raters look for. We know where veterans lose — and we teach you exactly how not to.
Our initial phone call is completely free — that's where we get to know your situation, understand where you are in the process, and determine whether VetBeacon is the right fit for what you need. If it is, joining the program comes with a one-time, low-cost fee that gives you full access to our course library, materials, templates, and resources — for life. No subscriptions, no percentage of your compensation, no hidden costs.
Never. VetBeacon does not take a single dollar of your back pay or monthly VA compensation — not now, not ever. That money belongs to you. It is the result of your service, your sacrifice, and your effort through this process. We are an education program, not a percentage-based claims company.
Yes. We understand that financial situations vary — especially for veterans who haven't yet received the compensation they're owed. Reach out during your free consultation and we'll walk you through the options available so cost isn't a barrier to getting started.
VetBeacon uses technology to help organize and deliver educational content within the program. However, your guidance, support, and direct communication comes from real people who have worked in or around the VA disability system — not a chatbot or automated system. AI is a tool, not a substitute for the human expertise we bring to every veteran we work with.
Yes. VetBeacon provides real human support throughout the program. Our team is available to answer your questions and help clarify course content at every step. You're not left to figure this out on your own — and you're never talking to a bot.
You can reach VetBeacon by emailing info@vetbeacon.us, using the contact form on our Contact page, or booking a free intro call using the button at the top of any page. Our team is available Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM Pacific, excluding major holidays, and responds to all inquiries within 1 business day.
The Program & Its Limits
VetBeacon provides a structured, phase-by-phase program that covers the entire VA disability claims journey — from understanding what to claim and how to build your evidence, to preparing for your C&P exam, and navigating the post-decision landscape. You get access to a full video course library, guided workbook, condition-specific templates, doctor discussion guides, buddy letter coaching, C&P prep modules, and a real support team.
You won't be handed a checklist and left alone. We walk alongside you the entire way.
The VetBeacon program follows three main phases: Phase 1 – Prepare & Build Your Case (intake, course access, workbook, condition documentation, evidence gathering), Phase 2 – C&P Exam Preparation (dedicated module for physical and mental health conditions), and Phase 3 – Post-Decision Support (reviewing your outcome, understanding appeals, and planning next steps).
See the full breakdown on our Program Overview page.
The program includes: a full video course library covering every phase of the claims process, a comprehensive guided workbook, condition-specific claim templates, doctor and therapist discussion guides, buddy letter coaching, a dedicated C&P exam preparation module, DBQ and nexus letter guidance, personal statement frameworks, post-decision resources (appeals, supplemental claims), and direct access to our support team throughout your journey.
The VA typically takes 3–6 months to process a standard claim, though timelines vary based on claim complexity, regional office backlog, and whether C&P exams are required. Appeals and supplemental claims can take longer.
Your preparation with VetBeacon can begin immediately. Filing a well-prepared, well-documented claim from the start dramatically reduces the risk of delays from development letters or additional evidence requests — and positions you to walk in to your C&P exam ready.
Yes — and we take this seriously. The C&P exam is the single most important event in most claims, and it's where veterans are most commonly underprepared. VetBeacon has a dedicated C&P preparation module that covers what to expect, how the exam is structured, how to accurately describe your physical conditions and their impact on your daily life, and how to represent mental health conditions — PTSD, depression, anxiety, and chronic stress — in a way that gives the examiner a complete and accurate picture.
Yes. VetBeacon provides templates and detailed guidance for all key supporting documents: Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs), nexus letters, buddy statements, and personal statements. We don't draft these documents for you — but we teach you exactly what they need to say, how to frame them, and how to work with your providers and fellow veterans to get them right. If drafting these documents is something you'd prefer to outsource, we have recommendations for resources outside of our program scope that can assist.
Yes. Denials are common and often reversible with the right approach. VetBeacon helps you understand the specific reason for your denial, identify what evidence was missing or insufficient, and build a stronger case for a supplemental claim, Higher-Level Review, or appeal to the Board of Veterans' Appeals. A denial is not a final answer — it's feedback. We help you use it.
No — and that's by design. VetBeacon is an education and guidance program, not an accredited claims representative service. We cannot file claims on your behalf, attend VA appointments as your representative, submit documents under your signature, or legally act as your agent or attorney.
What we do is teach you to become the most informed, most prepared advocate for your own claim — because nobody knows your story like you do. Relying on someone else to interpret your service history and communicate your experiences to the VA means leaving your compensation in the hands of someone else's words and discretion. VetBeacon eliminates the guesswork. Our program gives you the knowledge, the language, and the confidence to speak for yourself — so you walk into this process with clarity, ownership, and the strength to pursue every dollar you've earned.
Absolutely. VetBeacon is designed to complement, not replace, a VSO or other accredited representative. Many of the veterans our program has supported use VetBeacon to understand themselves and the why — learning the process, the language, and what to look for — then work with a VSO to ensure the VA does their part to rate them correctly. You don't have to choose one or the other. Both can serve you at the same time.
VetBeacon cannot:
- File claims on your behalf
- Provide legal representation or act as your accredited agent or attorney
- Write your medical nexus letters
- Guarantee a specific rating or outcome
- Represent you at hearings
We are an education and support program, and we're transparent about where our scope ends. If you need someone to formally represent your claim, a VA-accredited claims agent, VSO, or veterans law attorney is the right resource. We would be happy to connect with you and help point you toward the type of support that would work best for your unique situation.
Beyond Disability Compensation
VetBeacon's primary focus is veteran disability compensation claims (Chapter 11 benefits). Survivor benefits are not a core area of our program — but that doesn't mean we'd leave you without direction. If survivor benefits are what you're navigating, we'd be happy to share whatever information we have and point you toward the right resources and support. Reach out to our team directly at info@vetbeacon.us and we'll do our best to help point you in the right direction.
VetBeacon is purpose-built around VA disability compensation. We don't currently offer dedicated programming for military retirement, VA pension claims, home loan guaranty issues, GI Bill / education benefits, or vocational rehabilitation. These are important benefit areas and we respect their complexity — they're just not where our depth lies.
For those areas, the VA's own resources, your local VSO, or a benefits counselor are your best starting points. We're happy to point you in the right direction when you reach out.
